Villanova Accused of Homophobia by Cancelled Performance Artist

It was probably inevitable.

Amid cries of “homophobia,” the news has become a hot topic and numerous articles have been published. What’s the terrible offense? Acting on concerns reported by The Cardinal Newman Society, Villanova University’s president canceled the University’s invitation to a militant gay rights performance artist who has reportedly appeared nude and simulated sex on stage.

Just a few days ago, the school released a statement that it had cancelled its invitation to Tim Miller, who had been asked to be an “artist in residence” at the Augustinian college this April.

Now, Miller is being quoted as saying what he believes is at the heart of the cancellation. “Villanova tries to present itself as being this really tolerant place,” he told The Philadelphia Inquirer, “but clearly they’re really succumbing to homophobia.”

The University reportedly said that Father Peter Donohue, the president of Villanova University, hadn’t known of the university’s invitation to Miller until the original report was published by The Cardinal Newman Society. And he then researched Miller’s art and found it to be “explicit” and “graphic.”

Donohue, former director of Villanova’s theater department, said that “as an artist and a priest, I find the choices that Mr. Miller makes to be disturbing.”

“I want to be clear that this had nothing to do with Mr. Miller’s sexual orientation, and I believe it is untrue that Villanova is a homophobic community,” he said. “Such a description concerns me far more than a cancellation.”

Fr. Donohue said that after learning of the invitation from The Cardinal Newman Society, he viewed Miller’s “performance art.”

The decision not to host Mr. Miller came after viewing his performance work and the manner in which he conveys his messages. The interpretation of art is open to debate. All art should provoke a response. As a theatre director, I have faced the issue of how to evoke such a response in a way that I deem appropriate for myself, my actors and audiences. There are always issues around language, content and production elements that need to be addressed. These choices are important in creating art.

As an artist and a priest, I find the choices that Mr. Miller makes to be disturbing. While some may disagree, as president of Villanova University I can assure you it is the explicit, graphic and sexual content of his performances that led to this decision—a decision that in no way was affected by issues of sexual orientation.

Fr. Donohue insisted that Villanova “is and always will be an inclusive community.” Nearby Bryn Mawr College has announced that they intend to invite Miller to lead a student workshop there.

Sad to say the leaders of Catholic colleges such as Forham- Fairfield(Monolougue-pro homosexual conf. recently) and now Villanova need to take care who they are allowing to preform and teach on the campuses of Catholic colleges.

It really looks like it’s one of those situation whereby a women’s undergraduate college is sticking its tongue out at a “closed minded” Catholic University and demonstrating how freed up they are a Bryn Mawr by allowing a disgusting so-called artist to claim that he is an artist. In my humble opinion he is a man with a homosexual orientation who wants to flaunt himself and pretend it’s art and when challenged, resorts to smearing those who disagree with his “art” by calling them homophoic. He’s more of a shock jock who enjoys being an exhibitionist while calling it art. Reminds me of the “KIng with no Clothes” story. Lets hope there are more people like Father Peter Donohue who are willing to stand up and expose the political correctiness of Bryn Mawr and those who sacrifice decency for immorality and try to claim it’s art.

Vulgarity is a poor excuse for art. Thanks to Fr. Peter for responsibly dispatching his duties to the students and their families. Decency is a valuable virtue we need to continue to cultivate, especially in our current culture.

Thank you, Fr. Donohue. I have grandchildren who graduated from Villanova, and I’m glad to say they continue to be very proud of their Alma Mater, and they continue to be practising Catholics.

So who WAS the set-up artist @ Villanova who caused this debacle? Was the university hierarchy blindsided or did it turn a convenient blind eye from the get-go,thinking that was the path of convenience & least resistance? Unfortunately, it reeks at best of the kind of culture that the Cardinal Newman Socieity was formed to counteract, or at worst, moral cowardice.

Thanks to Fr. Donohue for taking the stand that he did and thanks to the Cardinal Newman Society for its continued vigilance on these issues. I am currently going through the college selection process with my son and am looking very carefully at those colleges that profess to be “Catholic”, but aren’t. Believe me, I don’t care how great the sports programs are–I am not going to spend $50,000 a year to have my child lose the faith that we have tried so hard to instill up until now. So far, Villanova’s still on the list, but now, St. Joe’s most definitely is NOT.

Three cheers for Villanova.I find it hard to believe this guy was ever scheduled on a Catholic college to begin with. And I am so sick of this homophobia charge. Homophobia is a made up word that didn’t even exist before the 60’s. When people expressed dismay or complained about the push of the homosexual agenda in that decade (which I remember well) the homosexual hardliners came up with the new word. The intended goal being to create the illusion that when normal heterosexuals were repulsed or disgusted by what homosexuals practice in their lifestyle it was somehow proof that they were suffering from the newly discovered mental disease of homophobia. Now for example, we have another new word… Islamaphobia for all the people who prove their mental illness by expressing their concern over people who would like to see them dead, and who are making every effort around the world to see that it happens. So there you have it… I am definitely suffering not one but two severe cases of mental illness.
